While examining a laptop I ran into a nasty virus labeled Internet Security 2010. Many of the viruses that are hitting the web now are fake virus scanning software. These are some of the nastier viruses to infect unsuspecting users. This particular one would label every process that ran on the computer as a virus; and immediately stop it. That included any web browser, legitimate virus scan, and any Windows application. In order to clean this computer I had to boot the computer into safe mode, and launch Combo fix from a flash drive. Combo fix was able to break the virus into pieces and stop the executable from running. Once Combo fix completed I was able to properly boot the computer and run Microsoft Security Essentials to clean the remainder of the virus. This serves as a reminder that it is always good practice to keep basic virus cleaners on a flash drive or CD in case you run into a virus that blocks Internet access.
